ECOWAS Launches Human Rights Course at KAIPTC in West Africa

Accra, Ghana – June 8, 2026, The Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC), in partnership with the ECOWAS Commission, officially opened the ECOWAS Human Rights Course 2026 on Monday, 8 June 2026, in Accra. The programme brought together 30 participants from National Human Rights Institutions, civil society organisations, human rights defender networks and the ECOWAS Commission to strengthen human rights practice and cooperation across West Africa.
Delivering the opening remarks, the Deputy Commandant of KAIPTC, Brigadier General Zibrim Ayorrogo, highlighted the complex challenges facing the region, including violent extremism, humanitarian crises, climate-related pressures and the growing impact of digital technologies. He emphasized that peace, democracy and human rights are interdependent and called for sustained collaboration among stakeholders to strengthen accountability and protection mechanisms. He further encouraged participants to actively engage in the programme and leverage the opportunity to build professional networks and share experiences.

Speaking on behalf of the ECOWAS Commission, the Head of Democracy and Good Governance, Mr. Ebenezer Asiedu, reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to supporting institutions and practitioners working to protect and promote human rights. He assured participants of ECOWAS’ continued support in enhancing their capacity to effectively carry out their responsibilities and safeguard individuals from abuse and violations. He stressed that respect for human rights remains fundamental to peace, democratic governance and sustainable development within the region.

The programme provides a platform for participants to deepen their understanding of emerging human rights issues, exchange experiences and strengthen regional efforts aimed at promoting and protecting human dignity across the ECOWAS community.
