Updated Study Launch On Niger Delta Pirates & Training Workshop On Gender/Women Peace & Security In West Africa

The Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC) and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), took a significant step towards a safer and more secured Gulf of Guinea by collaborating to launch the Updated Study on Niger Delta Pirates and Training Workshop on Gender/Women, Peace and Security in West Africa.

The initiatives, under the Danish Gulf of Guinea Maritime Security Programme, Peace and Security engagement II, were aimed at empowering women in the maritime sector and integrating gender equality into regional security strategies.

The initiative consisted of the following:

  1. A workshop which was implemented using a multifaceted approach and which delved into integrating the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) agenda into maritime governance, empowering participants from five West African nations.
  2. The launch of UNODC’s “Pirates of the Niger Delta II” report, which provides valuable insights into piracy trends and legal frameworks in five West Africa countries in the Gulf of Guinea.
  3. Translated training modules which ensured inclusivity and catered to the diverse backgrounds of trained participants.

This collaboration signifies a strong commitment to:

  • Advancing gender equality: Empowering women in the maritime sector for a more inclusive and representative approach to maritime security.
  • Bolstering regional capabilities: Equipping participants with knowledge and skills to tackle critical maritime challenges, paving the way for a more secure future for the region
  • Fostering international cooperation: KAIPTC partnering UNODC to signify a strong commitment to collaborative action for a safer and more secure Gulf of Guinea.
