Accra, Ghana – July 21, 2026 – The Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC), in partnership with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and with support from the Government of Denmark through the Danish Maritime Security Programme for the Gulf of Guinea, officially opened the Training on Gender and Maritime Security in West Africa: Integrating the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) Agenda on Tuesday, 21 July 2026.The training brought together 22 participants from across West Africa to strengthen regional capacity for integrating gender perspectives into maritime security policies and operations.
Speaking on behalf of UNODC, Ms. Jane Kimani Kinyanzui, Associate Programme Officer of the Global Maritime Crime Programme, described the training as an important regional platform that has contributed to increased women’s participation in maritime law enforcement and the integration of gender considerations into institutional policies.
She noted “The future of maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea depends not only on stronger institutions and better capabilities but also on ensuring that every talented professional, regardless of gender has the opportunity to contribute to safer seas, stronger communities and more resilient maritime governance.”
In his remarks, the outgoing Deputy Commandant of KAIPTC, Brigadier General ZibrimAyorrogo highlighted the persistent underrepresentation of women in the maritime sector despite the disproportionate impact of maritime crimes such as piracy, human trafficking and illegal fishing on women and coastal communities.
He stated, “A diverse gender perspective in the maritime space provides a distinct advantage in promoting a safer and more secure maritime domain. It is therefore essential to recognize and support women’s participation in the maritime sector and their contributions to a sustainable blue economy.”
The training forms part of ongoing efforts by KAIPTC, UNODC and the Government of Denmark to promote gender-responsive maritime security and strengthen regional cooperation towards safer and more resilient maritime spaces in West Africa.
