Accra, Ghana – 7 September 2026: The Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC) has officially opened the Security Sector Reform (SSR 26) Course at its premises in Accra.
The course brings together 10 participants from police services in various countries. It is designed to strengthen the knowledge, skills and technical competencies of law enforcement personnel working in both stable and post-conflict environments.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Deputy Commandant of KAIPTC highlighted the complex and changing nature of security challenges facing countries today. He noted that these challenges require security and law enforcement personnel to have the appropriate knowledge and skills to respond effectively.
Brigadier General Deku explained that the course has been developed to reflect the realities of the West African security environment, seeking to enhance the knowledge base, skills and technical competencies of law enforcement personnel and support them in carrying out their responsibilities in different security environments.
He added that the SSR 26 course will also examine current security threats, policies and practices, while providing participants with opportunities to explore practical and innovative approaches to addressing these challenges.
‘A key focus of the course is human security, which has become an increasing concern in many African states. The course will therefore consider security from a broader perspective, with attention to the safety, wellbeing and protection of individuals and communities’ he said.
The participation of police personnel from different countries will also provide an opportunity for the exchange of experiences and best practices. This is expected to contribute to a better understanding of common security challenges and possible solutions within the region.
The opening of the SSR 26 course reflects KAIPTC’s continued commitment to building the capacity of security and law enforcement personnel and contributing to peace and security in West Africa and beyond.
