Abstract:
The transformation from military to civilian-led Multidimensional peace operation (MDPO) is indeed one of the most significant developments in UN peacekeeping. Civilians now represent approximately 20% of all UN peacekeepers with the qualitative role of civilians in peace operations changing exponentially yet there is a seeming gap in theory and practice about the real contribution of the civilian peacekeeper. This study therefore seeks to explore the contribution of the civilian to peace operations in Africa by using the liberal peace theory and PSO mandating frameworks of the UN and AU in substantiating this. Primary data will be collected with questionnaire and interview of mission staffs, deploying bodies and relevant stakeholders for UNMISS and AMISOM.Outlining the structure and composition of the civilian component in UN and AU peace operations in Africa; describing the role of the civilian component in UN and AU peace operations in Africa; discussing the advantages and challenges faced by civilians in mandate implementation in UN and AU peace operations in Africa.
