(Banjul, The Gambia – July 10, 2025): In a significant step toward fostering regional collaboration in peace and security, the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC) has officially launched its second National Alumni Chapter in The Gambia. This follows the successful launch of the first chapter in Sierra Leone in 2024.
The ceremony, held in Banjul, brought together nearly 40 alumni—some of whom have benefited from KAIPTC courses dating back to 2012 in areas such as election management, disaster preparedness, conflict prevention, and humanitarian assistance. The event marks a key milestone in KAIPTC’s broader strategy to deepen engagement with its alumni across the continent.
Addressing the gathering, Acting Commandant of KAIPTC, Air Commodore David Akrong, emphasized the significance of the launch as both a reunion and a renewed commitment to the Centre’s mission.
“Today is more than a gathering of friends and colleagues—it’s a celebration of our shared purpose and an opportunity to re-engage with the Centre that has shaped many of our professional journeys,” he noted. “Our alumni are not just former students; they are lifelong ambassadors of our mission.”
Air Commodore Akrong expressed his appreciation to alumni for their dedication and lauded the newly elected executive members for stepping up to lead the chapter. He administered the oath of office to the executives and urged them to build a strong, collaborative alumni network that would bring mutual benefits to both members and the Centre.
Air Commodore Akrong urged members to remain active in supporting the chapter and to use their influence to promote the values of peace, security, and good governance in the region.
Building a Community for Impact
The establishment of the Gambian chapter is part of KAIPTC’s vision to create a vibrant, continent-wide alumni network. The newly launched chapter aims to serve as a platform for professional networking, continuing education, mentorship, and collaborative peacebuilding initiatives.
Under the theme, “Unity for Peace and Security: Strengthening the Alumni Network for Regional Impact,” the chapter will foster ongoing engagement among KAIPTC graduates in The Gambia and the sub-region, connecting professionals from government, civil society, international organizations, and the private sector.
Objectives for the Alumni Chapters
The four main objectives of the chapter include the following: Fostering lifelong relationships between KAIPTC and its alumni; supporting professional development through training, mentorship, and job opportunities; facilitating knowledge sharing and collaboration on peace and security initiatives; and encouraging alumni contributions to the growth and sustainability of KAIPTC.
New Executive Team Elected
In line with the Centre’s commitment to inclusive leadership, elections were held during the launch to select key officers who will lead the chapter. The newly elected executives include Mariynn Jabang, President; Bubacarr Sambou, Vice President; Mariama Barry, Secretary General; Juju Jallow, Public Relations Officer, and Lamin Jallow, Vice Public Relations Officer.
Each of the elected members expressed deep appreciation for the opportunity to serve and highlighted how their training at KAIPTC has significantly impacted their careers—from enhancing gender advocacy work to strengthening national election monitoring and counterterrorism efforts.
The newly elected President, Mariynn Jabang, pledged to “amplify the voice of the alumni and keep them constantly engaged with the Centre’s activities.”
Strengthening the KAIPTC Legacy
As the Centre continues to expand its alumni network across Africa, the launch in Banjul stands as a reminder of the enduring bonds formed at KAIPTC—and the critical role those bonds can play in shaping a more peaceful and secure continent.
