The Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC) has launched its inaugural Executive Travel Security Course.
It is aimed at equipping executives and frequent travellers with the skills and knowledge to better manage emerging travel-related security risks.
Colonel Lawrence Deku, Director of Training, speaking at the opening ceremony in Accra on behalf of the Commandant of KAIPTC, said the course was designed to respond to the growing complexity of security threats confronting travellers in an evolving global environment.
He said the Centre, as a hub for education, training and research in peace and security, had identified a critical gap in travel risk management, particularly for executives whose professional responsibilities often required frequent movement across borders.
Colonel Deku noted that while travel had traditionally been associated with destinations, experiences and adventure, the contemporary global landscape had introduced new and unpredictable challenges, including targeted crime, terrorism, natural disasters and health crises.
He said these realities had made duty of care not only an ethical consideration but a fundamental obligation to individuals and their organisations.
The Director of Training said the Executive Travel Security Course was the first of its kind, as it seeks to bridge the gap in understanding comprehensive travel risk management by placing responsibility not only on institutions but also on individual travellers.
He explained that the course would explore key areas such as risk assessment and threat analysis, personal security best practices, situational awareness and crisis management, cultural awareness and local customs, emergency planning and response, as well as cybersecurity for travellers.
According to him, the objective was not merely to share theoretical knowledge but to expose participants to practical tools and skills that would enable them to identify potential risks and respond effectively should an incident occur.

Colonel Deku said the initiative underscored KAIPTC’s commitment to the safety, well-being and confidence of travellers, whether they were moving for business or leisure.
He expressed optimism that the knowledge gained would have long-term benefits for participants and their organisations.
He commended the course team for their efforts in developing and delivering the pioneering programme and urged participants to take full advantage of the opportunity to invest in their personal security.
Colonel Deku formally declared the Executive Travel Security Course open and welcomed participants to what he described as “the future of safe travel,” expressing confidence that the programme would contribute meaningfully to safer and more informed travel practices.
