KAIPTC HOLDS HANDOVER CEREMONY AS MAJOR GENERAL RICHARD ADDO GYANE ENDS TENURE AS COMMANDANT

(Accra, Ghana – May 8, 2025) – The Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC) held a colourful and exciting ceremony today to mark the end of the tenure of its Commandant, Major General Richard Addo Gyane, who retires after nearly four decades of distinguished service in the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF).

In a heartfelt address, Major General Addo Gyane recounted a journey that began and culminated in an impressive career defined by perseverance, leadership, and trailblazing achievements. Having joined the Ghana Military Academy in 1985 as the only Flight Cadet in his intake, his eventual transition to the Electrical and Mechanical Engineering (EME) Corps would lay the foundation for a remarkable military trajectory.

He became the first EME officer in Ghana’s history to attain the rank of Brigadier General and subsequently Major General. Through sheer determination and merit-based leadership, he broke longstanding limitations on appointments and promotions traditionally reserved for certain Corps, inspiring a culture of inclusivity and excellence in the Service.

Over the course of his military career, Maj Gen Addo Gyane held several key positions, including Commanding Officer at Army HQ, Director Plans at the Department of Plans, Research and Development (PR&D), Deputy Director General PR&D, and the first non-infantry Army officer to serve as Director General PR&D. His leadership significantly influenced the expansion of the GAF, contributing to the establishment of TRADOC, Forward Operating Bases, and new unit deployments.

Appointed as Commandant of KAIPTC in November 2022 amidst post-COVID economic setbacks, he led a remarkable institutional transformation. Under his leadership, the Centre experienced infrastructural and operational revitalization. Notable achievements include the renovation of the Women Youth Peace and Security Institute (WYPSI) Block, refurbishment of the Multipurpose Court, the construction of a new Main Gate, containerized offices, and strengthened IT infrastructure — all of which have improved training delivery and broadened KAIPTC’s global reach.

Maj Gen Addo Gyane spearheaded initiatives to secure KAIPTC’s financial sustainability by commercializing selected courses, expanding academic offerings, and enhancing donor engagement. A new Youth Unit was integrated into the former Women, Peace and Security Institute (WPSI), now elevated to departmental status. Plans were also advanced for the creation of an Undergraduate School in peace studies and a KAIPTC Hotel to boost accommodation capacity. The Centre is further establishing a Digital Learning and Innovation Unit to modernize training delivery.

Maj Gen Addo Gyane expressed deep appreciation to donor/development partners, Advisory Board members, the Centre’s Executive Management, staff, and his family—especially his wife, whom he described as a pillar of strength throughout his career. He urged the youth to uphold values of integrity, hard work, and accountability, emphasizing that loyalty, courage, and honesty should guide all who aspire to leadership.

In a symbolic passing of the torch, Maj Gen Addo Gyane warmly welcomed his successor, Air Commodore David Akrong, describing him as a capable leader with a strong sense of purpose. He encouraged him to embrace inclusive leadership and draw upon the strengths of KAIPTC’s diverse team.

“Though I leave the KAIPTC in the flesh, my spirit and prayers shall remain with the Centre that I have come to love so much,” he said as he assured KAIPTC of his continued support and to its mission.

Major General Richard Addo Gyane leaves behind a legacy of impact, innovation, and inspiration — a true embodiment of service above self.
