HOSTILE ENVIRONMENT AWARENESS TRAINING (HEAT) Course 2026
Peace and Security Studies
Course Fee: - All expenses are covered by KAIPTC through the external partners (German Government).
- Tuition, air travel to and from the nearest international airport, food and accommodation will be provided by the KAIPTC. However, participants will have to bear the costs of their private travel and health insurance. Additionally, they are responsible for their own visa application costs.
Terms and Conditions:
- Participants must uphold KAIPTC values throughout their stay at KAIPTC and comply with Ghanaian laws.
- The Selection Committee will prioritise applications from the ECOWAS region, from UN/AU/ECOWAS missions, and from those who have not attended sponsored courses at KAIPTC in the past two years
- Selected participants unable to attend the course must notify the Course Director in writing at the earliest opportunity. Participants who withdraw or fail to attend less than 14 days before the course start date may be required to reimburse KAIPTC for any non-recoverable flight ticket costs incurred on their behalf. Non-payment may result in the participant and/or their sponsoring institution being excluded from consideration for future KAIPTC courses
- The course will be conducted entirely in English. There will be no translation into other languages
- All participants are to travel with travel and medical insurance that remains valid for an additional two weeks after the course end date. The KAIPTC and the German Government do not accept any responsibility for medical treatment, travel, or other insurance.
- Participants should note that Ghana requires proof of yellow fever vaccination for entry.
- This course includes a strenuous field exercise and is not suitable for pregnant women or for individuals with certain medical conditions or blood pressure problems.
- Participants will not be given any Daily Subsistence Allowance.
- By submitting an application, applicants consent to the collection, processing and storage of the personal data provided in the application form — including, but not limited to, name, rank, date of birth, nationality, passport details, employer and contact information — for the sole purpose of administering the selection process, organising travel and visa arrangements, and conducting the course. Applicant data may be shared with external parties. KAIPTC will not disclose personal data to any third party for purposes unrelated to the course without the applicant's prior consent. KAIPTC will retain applicant data for up to three years after the conclusion of the course for course evaluation, follow-up and alumni engagement. Applicants may request the deletion of their data at any time by contacting KAIPTC; such a request made prior to or during the course may affect the applicant's ability to participate. KAIPTC endeavours to protect all personal data in its custody through appropriate administrative measures. However, applicants are advised that KAIPTC does not currently operate under a formally codified data protection policy, and the level of protection may differ from the standards applicable in the applicant's home jurisdiction.

Background
Conflict environments differ from the usual living and working spaces people are accustomed to. They are characterised by high risk and rapidly evolving conditions, which require a high level of situational awareness and specific survival skills. The HEAT programme aims to equip stakeholders (usually those operating in conflict zones) with the awareness and skills needed to function effectively in hostile environments. This year, the programme will be tailored to the typical multidimensional environment of peace operations.
Course Aim
This course aims to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of the hazards encountered in hostile environments. It also seeks to improve their skills and abilities to respond appropriately when deployed in such settings.
Training Objectives
The main training objectives of the HEAT course are to:
Target Group
This training is designed for 35 participants, ideally selected from personnel such as the Military, Civil Police/Security Services, and Civilians deployed in crisis zones; humanitarian workers operating in high-risk areas; personnel preparing for deployment to crisis zones; or representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or embassies (nominations).

Teaching Methodology
The Collaborative Problem-Based Learning approach will be used to deliver the course, ensuring active student participation under the guidance of an experienced team of facilitators. Instructional content will be delivered through a range of methods, including lectures, participatory discussions, PowerPoint presentations, simulation exercises, practice sessions, and field exercises.

Selection Process
