Course Aim
The course aims to equip participants with a thorough, conceptual, and operational understanding of the principles, procedures, and current approaches to DDR programs and related tools.
Target Group
The course is tailored for professionals involved in peace-building activities, including but not limited to:
- Military, Police, and Civilian mission staff involved or seeking deployment in DDR programs.
- Researchers in DDR and broader peace building.
- Representatives from client organizations such as DPO, UNDP, other UN agencies, National DDR Commissions, MDA’s, ECOWAS/AU, Multilateral agencies, World Bank, INGO’s, NGO’s, CBO’s, and Academic Institutions.

Learning Objectives
- Understand DDR concepts, policies, and strategies.
- Identify components, activities, and issues related to DDR.
- Recognize actors and institutions involved in DDR.
- Demonstrate practical skills in working on DDR.
- Understand how DDR can adapt to new environments.
Eligibility Criteria
Beyond KAIPTC’s standard criteria, preference will be given to operational/mid-level personnel with at least six months’ experience in DDR or those from countries about to embark on DDR initiatives.
Pedagogical Approach
This training adopts a Collaborative Problem-Based Learning (CPBL) approach, combining presentations, group discussions, teamwork, Q&A sessions, case studies, and practical or field exercises. Expert facilitators will guide discussions, stimulate critical thinking, and help participants apply DDR tools and concepts. These interactive methods ensure participants gain hands-on familiarity with the key principles and practices of DDR.
Course Content
The course will be structured around six comprehensive modules:
- Introduction to DDR, Legal and Policy Frameworks;
- Planning for DDR;
- Structures and Operations
- Support to DDR;
- Reintegration;
- Cross Cutting Issues.
Selection Process
After the deadline, the selection board will meet and decide selection based on merit and a balanced class composition. The process will be as following:
- Selection Board will decide on shortlisted and waitlisted applications
- Shortlisted candidates will be asked to confirm their seats bindingly
- Should not all shortlisted candidates confirm their seats, these will be offered to candidates on the waitlist on “first come first served” basis
