Change of Leadership – Air Commodore David Anetey Akrong takes over as Commandant

The 2nd Trimester marked a significant moment of transition with the handing over of command from Major General Richard Addo Gyane to Air Commodore David Anetey Akrong, following a colourful ceremony held on May 8, 2025.

Major General Addo Gyane, who retired after nearly four decades of distinguished service in the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), left a legacy of transformation and innovation at the Centre. Under his stewardship, KAIPTC recorded notable achievements in infrastructure development, operational reforms and financial sustainability.

At the ceremony, Major General Addo Gyane expressed gratitude to development partners and staff while charging the next generation of leaders to embrace integrity, courage and accountability. He assured KAIPTC of his continued support even in retirement, remarking:

“Though I leave the KAIPTC in the flesh, my spirit and prayers shall remain with the Centre that I have come to love so much.”

In a symbolic passing of the torch, he welcomed his successor, Air Commodore David Akrong, describing him as a capable leader with vision and purpose.

Who is the New Commandant?

Air Commodore David Anetey Akrong brings to KAIPTC a wealth of experience in operational leadership, training and international peace support. A seasoned pilot officer of the Ghana Armed Forces, he has held senior appointments including Director of Training at the Ghana Air Force Headquarters and Deputy Commandant of KAIPTC before his elevation to Acting Commandant.

He has served extensively in international peacekeeping missions under the United Nations and the African Union, gaining first-hand experience in conflict management and multinational cooperation.

Air Commodore Akrong is also an accomplished academic, holding advanced degrees in Defence and Security Studies, as well as training certifications from leading international military institutions. Throughout his career, he has been recognized for his commitment to innovation, discipline and mentorship of younger officers.

His leadership at KAIPTC is expected to build on the solid foundation laid by his predecessors, with a focus on enhancing the Centre’s regional and continental relevance in a rapidly changing peace and security landscape.

The transition underscores KAIPTC’s culture of continuity — honouring past leadership while charting new pathways to remain a leading African institution in peace and security.
