Acting Commandant Engages Former Gambian Vice President on Peace and Security

As part of a series of high-level engagements in The Gambia, the Acting Commandant of the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC), Air Commodore David Akrong, paid a courtesy visit to H.E. Fatoumata Jallow-Tambajang, former Vice President of The Gambia and KAIPTC Peace Ambassador.

The discussions were wide-ranging and deeply insightful, touching on the current peace and security landscape in The Gambia and the broader West African region. H.E. Jallow-Tambajang emphasized the centrality of the Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) Agenda to sustainable peace efforts, reaffirming that UN Security Council Resolution 1325 remains pivotal to conflict prevention and resolution initiatives across the continent.

H.E. Fatoumata Jallow-Tambajang who was previously the Minister of Women’s Affairs in The Gambia from February 2017 to June 2018, reiterated the importance of women’s inclusion and leadership in peace processes, noting the ongoing ripple effects of WPS programming on national and regional stability.

Air Commodore Akrong reaffirmed KAIPTC’s commitment to advancing peace and security through training, advocacy, research, and capacity building. He highlighted the Centre’s ongoing partnership with Gambian institutions, including the current Training-of-Trainers programme on monitoring the implementation of the WPS Agenda under the African Union’s Continental Results Framework.

In the spirit of KAIPTC’s continued partnerships and collaboration, the meeting concluded with mutual expressions of support for deepening engagement on peace and security, and warm acknowledgements of the Centre’s past and current leadership.
