Course Fee: - All expenses are covered by KAIPTC through the external partners (German Government).
- The cost of Tuition, Air Travel from home to Accra and back, feeding and accommodation will be covered by KAIPTC. Participants will however have to bear the cost of requisite travel/health insurance. Additionally, participants will bear the cost of their own visa arrangements if required.

• The course is conducted in English only.
• This course comes with a rigorous field training exercise and therefore not recommended for expectant mothers or persons with peculiar medical challenges.
• No Daily Subsistence Allowances (DSA) would be provided to participants.

Introduction/Background
Conflict environments are different from the regular living and work spaces to which people are accustomed. These are characterised by high risk and rapidly changing environmental conditions, which require a high level of situational awareness and the employment of specific survival skills. The HEAT programme is designed to provide stakeholders (usually persons associated with conflict environments) with the necessary awareness and skills to enable them function in a hostile environment. The programme for this year will be tailored towards the typical multi-dimensional peace operations environment.
Course Goal/Aim/Objectives
This aim of the course is to equip participants with knowledge of the various dangers in hostile environments and to enhance their skills/capacity to react appropriately when deployed in a hostile environment.
Training Objectives
The overall training objectives for the HEAT course are to:
- Enhance participant’s knowledge on hostile mission environments.
- Increase participant’s skills needed to operate in a hostile Peace Operation environment.
- Equip participants with requisite knowledge/skills for survival and appropriate actions in critical situations.
Target Group/Course Capacity
The training targets about 20-30 participants preferably from:
- Military, Civil Police/Security Services and Civilians regularly deployed into conflict areas.
- Humanitarian workers operating in high risk areas.
- Personnel preparing to deploy into crisis areas.
- Foreign Missions, Foreign Affairs/Embassy staff.
- Journalists who provide media coverage in conflict environments.
- Corporate workers with presence in conflict environment.
- All other stakeholder.
Course content
The HEAT programme combines theoretical and practical modules/topics including the undermentioned:
- Introduction to contemporary peace operations.
- Living and working conditions in a mission environment.
- Stress Management in a hostile environment.
- Essential behaviour in critical situations.
- Negotiation.
- Hostage taking.
- First aid awareness.
- Personal health and hygiene in the field.
- IED/Mine awareness.
- Introduction to map reading and basic navigation skills.
- Voice Procedure and radio communication.
- Practical Field Exercises – simulation to deal with threats such as rioting, protests/demonstrations, kidnapping, hostage taking, and survival in the field.
Teaching Methodology
Participants will play active roles under the guidance of an experienced team of facilitators. KAIPTC courses are delivered within the framework of Collaborative Problem Based Learning (CPBL). These include:
- Lectures.
- Participatory discussions.
- Power point/presentations.
- Simulation exercises.
- Practice sessions/field exercises.
