2023 Election Observation in Liberia – Our Opinion

On 5-12 October 2024, the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC) deployed a 7-member election observation team to Liberia to observe the Presidential and Legislative elections which was held on 10 October 2024.

The KAIPTC election observation exercise is aimed to contribute to African Union (AU) and ECOWAS overarching objective of promoting good governance and credible elections in Africa. It also seeks to draw useful lessons to improve election security and management in the region. The KAIPTC team engaged with the following key stakeholders while in the mission: the National Elections Commission (NEC); Liberia National Police (LNP); ECOWAS Election Observation Mission to Liberia; African Union Election Observation Mission to Liberia; Liberia Peacebuilding Office; National/ECOWAS Situation Room; WANEP Situation Room; among others.

Overall, the mission observed that despite the notable delays which characterized most of the polling places in Central Monrovia, Sinkor, Paynesville and other districts outside of Monrovia, the Presidential and Legislative Election was  peaceful and credible. This assessment was consistent with findings by other international election observers who were present in the country.
