 Context

West Africa has seen a lot of crisis. The region is suffering from the effects of food insecurity, natural disasters, climate change, conflict and socio-political instability. Effective humanitarian assistance is ideally the result of coordinated efforts of multiple actors with specially trained personnel, which enables a coherent, coordinated and complementary engagement. The project “Capacity Building for Humanitarian Assistance in West Africa” is jointly organized by the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC) and the Austrian Study Centre for Peace and Conflict Resolution (ASPR), supported by the Austrian Development Agency (ADA) and the Austrian Ministry of Defense (MOD) to build personal and institutional capacities for Humanitarian Assistance in West Africa.

Purpose

The KAIPTC offers mentoring opportunity to an Assistant Course director for the project “Capacity Building for Humanitarian Assistance in West Africa” to assist a suited candidate to

  • adapt and reach her/his full potential in Humanitarian Assistance,
  • to understand regional and international structures
  • to build networks
  • to improve the candidate’s profile through training on the job in order to support his/her career development.

Objectives

The mentee will benefit from the access to the expertise at the KAIPTC, particularly concerning Humanitarian Assistance in West Africa and receive guidance on how to plan and implement courses. He or she will also have the opportunity to learn from various sections at the Centre. He or she will find increased professional networking opportunities, deepen administrative and operative skills over the period.

Duration

About 24 months

Main Duties

  1. Active contribution to the planning, implementation and evaluation of workshops (HAWA Core Course, HAWA ToT, HAWA Mentorship);
  2. Assist the Course Director in the following areas:
    • financial planning and accounting,
    • data management,
    • statistics,
    • IT-support
    • Report writing
  1. Assist in the management of training resources;
  2. support the lessons-learned-processes based on LMS;
  3. Work closely with all supporting units such as DPU, corporate affairs etc. to ensure all logistics and administrative needs of participants are met before and during the course;
  4. Rapporteur at all course-related events;
  5. Provide the TED unit with feedback from courses for analysis and ensure ELQ 2s are done;
  6. Ensure proper records are kept of relevant details of courses;
  7. Assist the project manager from time to time and as determined by the Course Director;
  8. Perform other tasks assigned by supervisor within the scope and content of mentee role.

Requirements

The person must:

  • At least a degree in any related discipline;
  • have at least 3 years of work experience in the field of humanitarian assistance; or civil protection, preferably in a governmental agency;
  • be fluent in both English and French (Non-negotiable);
  • have a sincere interest to participate in the mentoring opportunity;
  • be citizen of one of the ADA target countries (Ghana, Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Mali and Senegal);
  • be able to live and work in Ghana by their own means;
  • open-minded and a willing to learn;
  • good interpersonal relationship skills.
