Topic: State Response to Violent Extremism in Burkina Faso
Speaker: Rahima Moomin
Date: Wednesday 3rd November 2021
Time: 1000hrs

Abstract:

Violent extremism continues to increase in the Sahel Region. Since 2016, extremist groups have gained a stronghold by manipulating rural populations’ frustrations and resentment. The Burkinabe government has since, strengthened its military force and self defense groups in response to violent extremism. Although the State has employed strong methods to respond to violence extremism, the approaches have limited impact. However, efforts among the security agencies are not clearly defined due to lack of coordination. This policy brief offers an evidence-based analysis on how the state security and defence institutions together with self-defence groups such as the Volunteers for the Defense of the Homeland (VDP) have responded to violent extremism in Burkina Faso.
