IGP calls for deeper collaboration between Police Service and KAIPTC

The Inspector General of Police (IGP) of Ghana, Mr. David Asante-Apeatu, has highlighted the need to strengthen the rapport between the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC), and the Ghana Police Service, to achieve shared goals on peace and security in the nation and beyond.

“We can further collaborate to explore other critical areas of policing, including counter terrorism, transnational organized crime, human trafficking and proliferation of small arms”. This move, he believes, will not only be beneficial to the Ghana Police Service, but also other Police Services within the ECOWAS sub-region.

Addressing a total of 60 participants, comprising 30 males and 30 females at the closing ceremony of a two-week Police Pre-Deployment Training Course held at KAIPTC, the IGP was optimistic that his officers will display a high level of discipline and utmost respect and recognition for the laws, culture and customs of the host nation and other mission colleagues, as successful peacekeeping is always dependent on this.

Mr. David Asante-Apeatu reassured the gathering that the training of his men will deepen the Police Services’ fervent efforts to make its vision a reality; “the Ghana Police Service is striving to actualize its vision of becoming a world class police service capable of delivering planned, democratic, protective, and peaceful services up to standards of international best practice”, he revealed.

The IGP was very grateful to the German government for funding the training course.

The Police Pre-Deployment Training course is targeted at enhancing capacity to deliver effectively at both operational and tactical levels relating to the roles, responsibilities and operating procedures of Police Mandated tasks in UN Peacekeeping Operations.

Participants were taken through such topics as Nature of Conflict in Africa, AU History and Background, Introduction to UNPKO, UNPKO functions, Human Rights in PKO, Respect for Diversity in UN, Sexual Exploitation and Abuse and other equally important topics to prepare and equip them adequately for upcoming missions.
