GIZ hands over interpretation equipment to KAIPTC during official visit to the Centre

Friday, 23rd April: The GIZ Country Director for Ghana, Mrs. Regina Bauerochse Barbosa, as part of her official visit to the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC), has presented a state of the art Bosch translation/conferencing equipment to the Centre.

This is the second equipment GIZ is funding for the Centre, to facilitate the multilingual delivery of courses. Currently, the Centre delivers its courses mainly in English and French, but with the foremost strategic objective “to enhance the capacity of ECOWAS, AU, and their relevant structures to perform their mandates in ensuring peace and security in Africa” as part of its five-year Strategic Plan (2019 – 2023), the Centre is taking initiatives to broaden accessibility to its courses and programmes by prospective applicants from all parts of Africa. This is to, ultimately, support the ECOWAS and the AU to fulfill their mandate to promote peace, human security and development in Africa.

Welcoming her to the Centre, the Commandant noted that the Government of Germany has been a great partner to the Centre since its inception, and has contributed massively to the growth of the Centre. The Centre, he said, has also enjoyed very fruitful collaboration with the GIZ team that supports KAIPTC led by Hannes Lambrecht, and expressed the hope that the warm relations between both organizations would continue in pursuit of the shared goals. He expressed deep appreciation for the invaluable technical and financial support to the Centre and wished her a successful tenure and stay in Ghana.

Handing over the equipment to the Centre, Mrs. Barbosa noted that, for a globally recognized international Centre of excellence for training such as the KAIPTC, it was critical that the Centre continually delivers on its vision. Thus the interpretation equipment is befitting and timely, as it will support the Centre to enhance the quality and professionalism of its training courses and programmes. The Commandant, on his part, assured the country director that the equipment would be put to good use and carefully kept in good condition.

The main features of the equipment comprise an interpreter desk, a pocket receiver which enables conference participants to listen to discussions in real comfort, a wireless discussion with touchscreen that provides crystal‑clear sound as a result of a high signal‑to‑noise ratio and smart frequency selection, a transmitter that enables simultaneous interpretation for four (4) languages as well as a radiator.

GIZ has been supporting the KAIPTC for over a decade. Its support to the Centre include strengthening demand-driven service delivery and training, organizational development and regional co-operation, and supporting the Centre to increase its financial sustainability and to deepen strategic engagement with its stakeholders. It has also supported organizational development processes at the Centre to help position the Centre competitively in the peace and security sector.  As a provider of international cooperation services for sustainable development and international education work, GIZ is dedicated to building a future worth living around the world; the institution has over 50 years of experience in a wide variety of areas, including economic development and employment, energy and the environment, and peace and security.

About the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre:

The Ghana Ministry of Defence (MoD) established the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC) in 1998 and commissioned it in 2004. The purpose was to build upon and share Ghana’s five decades of internationally acclaimed experience and competence in peace operations with other states in the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) region and the rest of Africa. This was in recognition of the need for training military, police and civilian men and women to meet the changing demands of multidimensional peace operations. The Centre is one of the three (3) Peacekeeping Training Centres of Excellence mandated by the ECOWAS to offer training in peacekeeping and peace support operations (PSO) in Africa.

The Centre delivers training courses in three thematic areas; Peace Support Operations, Conflict Management and Peace and Security Studies and also runs Masters and PhD programmes in same. The KAIPTC has a world-class research department that undertakes research in the thematic areas in Peace and Security. Located in Accra, Ghana, the KAIPTC is an internationally recognized institution and has to date trained and tutored over 21, 496 participants and students since its inception.

KAIPTC is a gender-sensitive organization and committed to gender equality. Following the launch of its gender policy in 2014, the Centre has mainstreamed gender into its policies and programmes, and integrates same in its focal areas, namely training, research and postgraduate education. The Centre has developed a Sexual Harassment policy and fully oriented employees on same.
