Disarmament Demobilisation and Reintegration Course 2019

Course Aim

The Course, through building individual skills, aims at enhancing the capacity and effectiveness of UN, Regional, Sub-regional, National and other institutions to perform peace operations by providing participants with a comprehensive, conceptual and operational level understanding of the principles, procedures and up to date practices involved in the planning, coordination and conduct of DDR programmes, properly reflecting new developments involved in the field of DDR”.

Learning Objectives

  1. Understand the concepts, policies and strategies of DDR;
  2. Identify the components, activities and other issues related to DDR;
  3. Identify the different actors and institutions involved in DDR;
  4. Suggest the different ways by which DDR programmes are planned and implemented;
  5. Acquire practical skills necessary when working on DDR;
  6. Suggest solutions on how DDR can be adapted to new environments and contexts.

Selection Process

After the deadline, the selection board will meet and decide selection based on merit and a balanced class composition. The process will be as following:

  • Selection Board will decide on shortlisted and waitlisted applications (First week of January 2019)
  • Shortlisted candidates will be asked to confirm their seats bindingly
  • Should not all shortlisted candidates confirm their seats, these will be offered to candidates on the waitlist on “first come first served” basis

 

Target Group

  1. Individuals involved directly or indirectly with DDR programmes;
  2. Individuals intending to seek deployment in DDR;
  3. Military, Police and Civilian mission staff;
  4. Researchers in the area of DDR and broader peace building;
  5. Other groups supported by client organizations, as : UNDPKO, UNDP and other UN agencies and their field offices, National DDR Commissions and MDA’, ECOWAS/AU, Multilateral agencies; World Bank, EU, INGO’s, NGO’s and Academic Institutions.

 

Course Content

The course aims to enhance participant’s knowledge and skills in the application of best practices in DDR through knowledge, skills and attitude in the following modules;

  1. Introduction to DDR, Legal and Policy Frameworks;
  2. Planning for DDR;
  3. Structures and Operations
  4. Support to DDR;
  5. Reintegration;
  6. Cross Cutting Issues;
  7. Final Exercise

Eligibility Criteria

In addition to the KAIPTC corporate eligibility criteria, priority would be given to;

  1. Operational/mid-level personnel;
  2. Participants who have at least 6 months experience working on DDR

programmes or other related areas;

  1. Participants from countries about to embark on DDR;
  2. Gender balance.

Pedagogical Approach

These approaches are methods to be used in facilitating the Course:

  1. Presentations;
  2. Simulations;
  3. Panel discussions;
  4. Group work;
  5. Case Studies;
  6. Exercises;
  7. Table discussions and
  8. Role Plays.

Terms and Conditions

Each participant will be required to pay a commitment fee of USD 500 as well as take care of his or her travel expenses,

Participants shall show proof of medical and travel insurance cover for duration of training in Ghana

KAIPTC will be responsible for participants’ accommodation and feeding for the duration of programme

English with French translation will be used for facilitation at the course.
