Defence Minister opens Two-Week Course at KAIPTC
Accra, 4th September, 2017: The Honorable Minister for Defence, Ghana, Mr. Dominic Nitiwul, has opened a two week course at the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC), on “Managing Defence in a Wider Security Context”.
The course which seeks to enable representatives from across the security sector to contribute to the development, implementation and review of national security and defence policies, is aimed, among others, at facilitating inter-ministerial co-ordination on security and defence issues.
Addressing 40 participants made up of senior and middle ranking military officers and civilian working in the wider security sector, Hon. Nitiwul, noted that “this course will perform a valuable function by drawing your minds to a torrent of ideas, information, interpretations and visions pertaining to the identification of appropriate policies, principles and techniques to advance defence and security sector developments in Africa”. He therefore encouraged participants to share their experiences and also reflect on the debates and discussions during the course.
He further stated that the training course will equip participants in their various duties to address security issues with a comprehensive understanding of the tools necessary for security and policy developments.
Hon. Dominic Nitiwul was full of praise for the British Government and Cranfield University for their unflinching support to the delivery of the course for the past five years.
The British High Commissioner to Ghana, Mr. Iain Walker, revealed that the MDWSC course involved the sharing of experiences with respect to cases of defence and security challenges. The two week course, he pointed out, would also tackle issue of managing internal security and responding to terrorism.
The Managing Security in a Wider Security Context course will enhance the knowledge, professional understanding and analytical skills necessary to improve and/or transform the governance and management of defence and security systems, thereby advancing the defence and security interests of participants and their respective countries.
Course content include Governance including policy formation, implementation and review, accountability and transparency, law, civil-military relations, as well as risk analysis.
