CALL FOR PAPERS

Call for Papers – Journal of African Peace and Security

Introduction

Although the incidence of civil war in Africa has over the last decade assumed a downward trend, threat to peace and security continue to rank prominently among the main challenges confronting states and societies on the continent. In many parts of Africa, political uncertainty appears to be giving way to order and predictability within the ongoing transition to liberal democracy. Yet, African people still grapple with multiple and diverse sources of insecurity that include (or can be traced to) armed conflict within states, extreme poverty, violent extremism and radicalization, peacebuilding failures, as well as environmental stresses and strains. While the African Union has evolved an African peace and security architecture, the organisation is not adequately equipped to address these challenges. What are the main sources of threat to peace and security in Africa and how are they connected? What steps can African states, the African Union, Africa’s regional mechanism as well as the United Nations take to ensure lasting peace and security on the African continent? What explains the failure of peacebuilding processes in Africa and how can they be addresses?

The Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC) is calling for manuscripts that respond to these and similar questions for publication in the second edition of its Journal of African Peace and Security. This annual peer-reviewed journal is intended to serve as a forum for critical discourses around issues of African peace and security that are informed by theory, research and practice from diverse perspectives.
