| RESPONSIBILTY
The Training Department is responsible for Collective Training such as Command and Staff training of Headquarters staff to work cohesively as a team. It is also responsible for pre-deployment training of Ghanaian battalions prior to embarking on Peacekeeping Operations (PKO).
ORGANIZATION
The Department is organized into a Command and Staff Trainer (CAST) with a Simulation Centre for Computer Assisted Training Exercises (CAXs), and a Field Training Team (FTT). While the CAST trains Headquarters (Commanders and their staff) through lectures, syndicate discussions and exercises the FTT gives practical training in Peacekeeping to troops in the field.
TRAINING MODELS AND PROGRAMMES
Currently, for Ghanaian troops training, the CAST uses the JANUS system of Simulation whiles the FTT conducts its training using the African Contingency Operations Training and Assistance (ACOTA) programme of the Department of Defence of the USA . However, the ABACUS system is being studied for the CAST.
MISSION
To provide KAIPTC with the ability to train and prepare Peacekeeping Force Headquarters (Commanders and their staff – military and civilian) at the operational level of command, to operate effectively and cohesively as a National or Regional Force Headquarters or as part of an international coalition Force Headquarters in contemporary Peacekeeping environment.
TASKS
• To prepare Headquarters (Commanders and their staff) as a team, at the appropriate level of command, for effective inter-operability in Peacekeeping operations. • To improve the inter-operability of Headquarters in multinational environments. • To improve awareness and understanding of Peacekeeping related issues of Headquarters staff. • To improve awareness and understanding of the functions of other collaborating agencies and organizations involved in Peacekeeping for effective co-operation and collaboration. • To introduce UN best practice, procedures and models for contemporary Peacekeeping. • To prepare Headquarters for ‘mission specific' Peacekeeping operations. • To conduct pre-deployment training for Ghanaian battalions for Peacekeeping operations.
TRAINING CONDUCTED
NATIONAL
The Training Department conducts pre-deployment training for ten (10) Ghanaian Battalions every year for peacekeeping operations in DR Congo (MONUC), Cote d'Ivoire (UNOCI), Liberia (UNMIL), Lebanon (UNIFIL) and Chad (MINURCAT)
INTERNATIONAL
• 14 Mar – 1 Apr 2004 . UNDPKO sponsored pre-deployment training for UNOCI Headquarters staff.
