The SALW Course is a 2 week residential course to be held at the KAIPTC, Accra, Ghana. In line with the KAIPTC style of training delivery, all courses will adopt the problem based learning methodology including interactive and adult learning styles of delivery. It will be conducted in English and French. The capacity of this Course is up to 30 participants.
Over the two weeks the foundation course will: 1. Introduce participants to the foundational issues pertaining to small arms and light weapons (SALW) and prepare them to confront context specific challenges; 2. To improve participants’ awareness of the fundamental managerial and advocacy skills necessary for the establishment of National Commissions for Small Arms and the promotion of SALW issues.
Aims & Objectives
The course seeks to train personnel of the National Commissions on Small Arms and their partners in member states of ECOWAS in broad spectrum of issues relating to small arms to enhance their capacities to manage and control the proliferation of small arms as well as consolidate peace in the sub-region.

• Basic definitions, concepts and theories of SALW • Demand and supply, Misuse of SALW • SALW and post-conflict peace-building • Evolution of SALW control initiatives • International legal and policy framework on SALW • Function and structure of NatComs • SALW National Survey • National Action Plan (Project design, management, monitoring and evaluation) • Basic ITC skills • SALW and Gender
The training targets the personnel of the various National Commissions for Small Arms and their partners. The course is part of a capacity building programme of the National Commissions for Small Arms (NatComs) in West Africa.
