Introduction

The Joint Campaign Planning Course (JCP) was introduced into the KAIPTC training catalogue at the very beginning of the Centre, in 2003. Two similar courses are actually delivered each year in KAIPTC (May – October), both of them being financed by France.  It is intended to make them gradually bilingual (FR – GB).

Course Description

A 2-week course delivered in French that provides senior officers involved in multidisciplinary peace support operations with the necessary theoretical and practical skills to enable them to achieve the operation planning process effectively in a modern peacekeeping environment. The course is designed particularly for senior officers, from the military, police, gendarmerie or even diplomats and their equivalents from all organizations involved in multidisciplinary peace support operations.

Course Aim

The aim of the course is to enhance the military component of regional peacekeeping operations by providing participants with a comprehensive operational level tools and principles, to perform the steps of planning operation as part of conflict management.

Target Group

The target audiences for this course are mainly military senior officers coming from ECOWAS countries. Other participants shall include civilian staff, police/gendarmerie and other military staff who are serving in current West African UN Missions.  The aim is to train staff officers who could be part of the Ecowas Stand-By Force HQ. Some slots could be allocated to AU Planelm members.

Entry Requirements

Nominees should hold the rank from major to colonel or equivalent (this course is open to the three services), and should have attended a staff course. All applicants are to have a working knowledge of French, both written and oral. A support in English could be provided on a case to case basis. This course is restricted to only persons nominated by their governments or organisations invited. 

Course Contents

This course is mainly dedicated to study the planning process (theory) and then, to practice and train through two staff planning exercises (practical application).

• Course Capacity – 20 participants.
• The course is residential and course participants will be accommodated at the KAIPTC.
• Collaborative Problem Based Learning (PBL) and facilitation will be employed as the teaching methods.
• Guest facilitators/presenters with field experiences will be invited to enrich the course content, if necessary.
• The Course will be funded by Government of the Republic of France to cover facilitation fees, travel, food and accommodation for participants and facilitators. AU personnel are encouraged to fund their own travel, to help reduce overall costs considerably.
