NEGOTIATION COURSE at KAIPTC

Course Dates  03 - 14 May 2010

Course Outline

This is a 2-week foundation course, which has specifically been designed for the KAIPTC in association with the Pearson Peacekeeping Centre.  It is being funded by the Government of Canada.

Course Aim

The aim of the course is to enhance the UN military and civilian components of regional peacekeeping operations by providing participants with a comprehensive operational level tools and principles, to perform the steps of planning, co-ordination and conduct of negotiations as part of conflict management.

Participants will practice negotiations techniques through a combination of exercises and role plays. The course includes cross-cutting issues such as culture, gender, vulnerable groups and communication skills in order to prepare participants to become effective negotiators

Participants

The principal target audience for this course will be predominantly, AU and ECOWAS military and civilian staff, and members of African civil organizations (IO,s and NGO,s). Other participants will include civil staff, police/gendarmerie and some military staff who are serving in current West African UN Missions.  Selection will strive to achieve gender balance of participants as much as possible.

Relevant Facts

-Maximum intake on the course – 25 participants.

- KAIPTC has residential accommodation for all participants.

- The course teaching methods will apply the principles of Problem Based Learning (PBL) and facilitation.

- Guest facilitators/presenters with field experiences will be invited to enrich the course content.

- Estimated budget costs will be covered by Government of Denmark and include facilitation fees, travel, food and accommodation for participants and facilitators. UN personnel are encouraged to fund their own travel, which will help reduce overall costs considerably.
