KAIPTC INVITES APPLICATIONS FOR ADMISSION TO THE MASTER OF ARTS DEGREE PROGRAMME IN GENDER, PEACE AND SECURITY (MGPS), 2018/2019 ACADEMIC YEAR

 

 

Programme Objectives

The overall objective of the course is to equip students with effective tools for analytical thinking, good judgment, leadership and other critical managerial skills in Gender, Peace and Security.

 

The Specific Objectives are to:

 

  • Equip students with the skills to achieve the highest professional standards in Gender, Peace and Security; Conflict Prevention, Resolution and Management; Peace Brokering and Security Management.
  • Equip graduates with specialized knowledge and skills to play a meaningful role in management and provide professional leadership in Multi-Dimensional Peace Operations, International/Regional Organizations, Peace Councils, Civil Society Organizations as well as Non-Governmental Organizations.
  • Meet the demands and aspirations for continuing education of employees serving in public and private sector organizations involved in conflict, peace and security issues.
  • Prepare interested individuals for a career in Peace and Security.
  • Improve opportunities for women to attain higher positions in international, regional and national organizations.

 

 

Courses Offered include:

 

Core

  • Theories and Concepts of Gender.
  • Theories and Analysis of Conflict, Peace and Security.
  • Gender, War and Conflict in Africa.
  • Gender Rights and International Law.

 

Required

  • Governance and Leadership in Africa.
  • Research Methods in Gender, Peace and Security.
  • Feminist Jurisprudence and Conflicts in Africa.
  • Contemporary and Emerging Security Issues in Africa – Seminar Series.

Electives

  • Gender and International Relations.
  • Gender, Human Rights and Conflict in Africa.
  • Gender and Post-Conflict Reconstruction and Development.
  • Gender, Security Sector and Multi-Dimensional Peace Operations.
  • Youth and Conflict in Africa.
  • Migration, Citizenship and Conflict.

 

Target Group

The Course is opened to individuals and personnel in Africa and the rest of the world.  Targeted personnel working with the following groups/organizations in Africa and outside the continent are encouraged to apply:

 

  1. Security and Intelligence Agencies.
  2. International and Regional Organizations (e.g. UN, AU, SADC, ECOWAS).
  3. Civil Society Groups.
  4. Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs).
  5. The Diplomatic Community.
  6. Civil/ Public Servants.
  7. Members of the Legislature/ Parliament/ Judiciary.
  8. Individuals with Interest in Gender, Peace and Security Studies.

 

 

Organization of Course

The Course will be organized in three modular semesters as follows:

 

  • First Session – 8th June to 13th July 2018.
  • Second Session – 5th November to 7th December 2018.
  • Third Session – 11th March to 6th April 2019.
  • Writing of Dissertation – April to July 2019.

 

Requirements for Admission

Admission to the Master’s Degree in Gender, Peace and Security requires a good Bachelor’s Degree (second class lower or better) or equivalent in any discipline from a recognized University. Basic understanding and comprehension of English is required. The course is opened to both male and female applicants, but female applicants are especially encouraged to apply.
