KAIPTC in association with the German Government through the German Technical Cooperation (GTZ) held the opening ceremony of the Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration (DDR) Foundation Course on Monday, 01 February, 2010.
The Foundation Course is set at the operational level hence the main target audience are middle-level civilian, military and police staff mainly from sub-Saharan African countries. Special considerations are given to United Nations (UN), Africa Union (AU) and Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS), civilian staff, National DDR Commission members and members of Non Governmental Organizations and Civil Society Organizations, who are either serving or likely to serve in the foreseeable future on DDR activities.
The opening ceremony for the programme took place at the KAIPTC Auditorium on Monday 1st February, 2010. In attendance were the Commandant of the KAIPTC, Air Vice Marshal (AVM) Dovlo, the Deputy German Ambassador to Ghana, Mr. Christian Winkler, the Deputy Commandant of the KAIPTC, Col Oppong Otchere, Head of Training of the KAIPTC, Col Leo Hirschmann, the Course Director, Col Yusuf Ibrahim, Course Facilitators and Participants, staff of the KAIPTC and the Media.
According to the Commandant of the KAIPTC, the Course is aimed at enhancing UN and regional peacekeeping capacity by providing participants with a comprehensive, operational level understanding of the principles and procedures involved in the planning, co-ordination and conduct of DDR and associated cross-cutting issues such as small arms control, human rights, gender, special needs groups and HIV/AIDS.
The Deputy German Ambassador also urged the participants to take advantage of the quality of facilitators at their disposal in order to achieve the objective of the course.
