COURSE OBJECTIVES

The overall objective of the course is to equip participants with effective tools for analytical thinking, leadership and other critical managerial skills in  Gender, Peace and Security.

The specific objectives of the course are to:

  • Provide students with knowledge of how gender is theorized, understood and incorporated in peace and security analysis, practice and policy.
  • Ensure participants achieve the highest professional standards in gender, peace and security,conflict prevention, resolution and management mediation, peace brokering and security management.
  • Equip graduates with specialized knowledge and skills to play a meaningful role in management and provide professional leadership in multi-dimensional Peace Support Operations, Regional Organizations, Peace Councils, National Security Councils, Border Security and National Security Institutions as well as Non Governmental Organizations and Advocacy Groups.
  • Meet the demands and aspirations for continuing education of employees serving in public and private sector organizations involved in peace and security issues.
  • Prepare interested individuals for a career in Peace and Security.
  • Improve opportunities for women to attain high positions in international organizations.

  • Democracy, Good Governance and Democratic Peace .
  • Contemporary and Emerging Security Issues in Gender.
  • Leadership.
  • Gender and Multi-Dimensional Peace Support Operations.
  • Human Rights and Conflicts.
  • Gender and Security Sector Institutions.
  • Gender and Conflicts.
  • Conflict and Security of the African State.
  • Political Economy and Security of Africa.
  • Gender and International Relations.
  • Research Methods in Gender, Peace and Security


TARGET GROUPS

This is an international course targeting persons working with the following
organizations in Africa:

  • International Organizations (including UN, AU, ECOWAS, etc).
  • Security Services.
  • Government Organizations.
  • Peace Councils.
  • Border Security Departments.
  • Humanitarian Agencies.
  • Civil Society Organizations.
  • The Civil Service.

COURSE SCHEDULE

The Course will be organized in two semesters as follows:
• 1 Semester: 4 June – 27 July 2012
• 2 Semester: 1 October – 23 November 2012
• Graduation: June 2013

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS 

A good 1 Degree (2 Class Lower and above) or its equivalent in any discipline from a recognized University. The course is opened to both male and female applicants, but female applicants are especially encouraged to apply.
