31 participants gear up for 2018 SSR Course

Accra, 12th March 2018: The Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC), has welcomed 31 Police Officers to the opening ceremony of the 2018 Security Sector Reform Course (SSR). The course targets middle level Police Officers and practitioners who out the reform duties in post-conflict reconstruction phase of peacebuilding.

The objective of the course is to equip participants with introductory knowledge on the concepts of peace and security in the African context; equip them to demonstrate competence in developing their role in peace building in post conflict environment, among others.

Sharing his expectations for the course, Kebbie Abass Conteh, a participant from Sierra Leone, was overly delighted by the opportunity to be at KAIPTC to broaden his scope on matters of security in Africa. “By the time I leave here, I expect that I will be well-grounded on Security Sector Reform”, he said.

The Director of Training at KAIPTC, Colonel Robert Affram, stated in his opening remarks, that changing roles of policing resulting from the emergence of asymmetric conflicts and security is a big challenge Africa is confronted with. He added that the evolving nature of security threats continue to undermine democracy in many states, noting that the SSR takes prime position in consolidating peace and stability.

Colonel Affram was confident the two-week training will widen the outlook of participants and keep them informed in pertinent issues of SSR and also deepen collaboration.

The 2018 edition of the course has 31 participants in attendance comprising 17 from Ghana, seven (7) from and Sierra Leone and seven (7) from Nigeria.
